Tape Vaulting

Off-Site Media Storage Overview

The rapid maturing of cloud-based backup and disaster recovery services — enabled by the convergence of virtualization, highly efficient disk-based backup technologies, and high bandwidth networks — has ushered in a new era in which electronic-based data storage and recovery services dominate the market for meeting today’s aggressive RTOs and RPOs. So has the cloud eliminated the need for tape?

Not at all. Tape remains an effective and economical backup choice for platforms hosting an organization’s less-than-mission-critical data. For lower tier data for which longer recovery times are acceptable, tape can be a more affordable solution than disk. Tape is also often the most economical — and possibly the technically superior — choice for long-term storage and archiving, especially for organizations subject to any of the estimated 10,000 regulations covering data retention, integrity and security. Solutions that include regular backup to tape provide many customers with a cost-effective combination of today’s most advanced backup technologies and the proven durability and longevity of tape stored securely offline.

Recovery Point has over 30 years of experience providing off-site data storage and transportation services. Certified media-only storage vaults are available in Gaithersburg, Maryland and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as well as through partner relationships in many other parts of the United States, under a single contract. By storing your backup media with the same vendor that provides your other disaster recovery services, you get the convenience of a single point of contact and eliminate virtually all of the traffic, weather and vendor management issues that so often impact tests and actual disaster events. We offer scheduled rotation of media during normal business hours, as well as emergency delivery services, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nationwide transportation and receiving services are available for clients who wish to stage recovery media alongside their recovery resources.

If your business continuity/disaster recovery program includes tape generation for archival purposes (disk-to-disk-to-tape), you may incorporate that requirement into your Recovery Point contract and we will manage all tape storage, rotation and transportation activities for you. Media can be generated locally in your hosting environment or across Recovery Point’s inter-site dark fiber network directly into remote off-site data storage vaulting facilities. With Recovery Point, clients enjoy the benefits of a single point of contact for both off-site data storage and enterprise disaster recovery services.
