GAITHERSBURG, MD; December 9, 2004: Hoisting a spade full of earth into strong winds, Montgomery County, Maryland, Executive, Doug Duncan helped break ground on a remarkable new disaster recovery facility in the Washington, D.C. suburbs that will soon be available to private industry and government. Recovery Point Systems (RPS), a 23-year old data security firm that operates the nation's only other Integrated Disaster Recovery Site (IDRS) in a nearby suburb, is developing the project, which combines a full suite of disaster recovery services with next generation facilities that meet federal guidelines for blast resistance.
Duncan was joined at the ground breaking by County economic development director, David Edgerley; RPS Chairman, Theodore Lombard, RPS President, Marc Langer; and James Resnick, of the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management.
"After 7 years in Montgomery County, we are delighted to have found another property that meets our requirements, to initiate a substantial development project, and to prepare for the creation of up to 100 new jobs right here at home," said RPS President, Marc Langer.
The Recovery Point Systems facility will be the largest of its kind in the nation, providing a "sealed" environment with redundancy built in to all critical utility and infrastructure elements, including electrical and communications services. The unprecedented facility is situated on 17 acres and is the first commercial building designed to meet the blast resistance security design criteria for new Federal office buildings established by GSA in 2001.
In addition to security benefits, the IDRS offers an alternate approach to traditional multi-vendor recovery solutions, bringing the four key service areas required for disaster recovery together under one roof: hotsite technology recovery, data storage and replication, end-user recovery with voice capability (including a work area accommodating up to 1,000 people), and pre-provisioned connectivity. Limited space for customer-dedicated suites will also be available. Delivery is expected in late 2005.
"The subject of disaster recovery is rising in importance in both the government and commercial sectors," Langer says. "In certain cases, federal government regulations now require specific security attributes. The new facility will allow both private industry and government to meet the highest standards specified for secure, continuous operations."
