What Exactly is Tier III Certification?

This dual, concurrently maintainable chiller network forms part of the mechanical infrastructure at the Recovery Point facilities and is required in order to achieve Tier III rating from the Uptime Institute

Recently, Recovery Point was awarded prestigious Tier III certification by the Uptime Institute, a foundation for education, certification, and leadership for the enterprise data center industry and data center professionals. This all sounds great, but what does it mean? In 1993 the Uptime Institute opened its doors, with the intent of becoming the authority in the data center industry. Along the way they developed the Tier Classification system for rating the concurrent maintainability and fault tolerance of data center facilities. In doing so, a method was forged for people to discern between companies offering data vaulting, tape backup, hot and cold sites, and any other data management services. Now here we are, living a long way from 1993 and technology and data backup systems have grown and been upgraded by leaps and bounds over the years.

The Uptime Institute is not affiliated with any manufacturer within any sector and is completely independent of any engineer-of-record. This creates a system for evaluation that is unfettered and unbiased, allowing them to evaluate and assist companies such as Recovery Point in their efforts to sustain their data centers for long, uninterrupted periods. For Recovery Point, receiving such an esteemed accolade from the Uptime Institute holds genuine value.

“Obviously we are delighted to be included in this elite group of companies with a Tier III certification,” says Marc Langer, President of Recovery Point.  “Our clients rely on us to help them keep their businesses running 24x7, so when we designed our facilities we had to do so with that very thought in mind. The idea of having any interruption to our clients operation is unthinkable in this industry so it gives us great pride to know that Recovery Point is the only service provider in the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity industry nationwide to hold Tier III data center certification.”

Uptime Institute’s tiered certification system breaks down as follows:

Tier I: Data centers on this level must have single, non-redundant distribution path serving IT equipment, as well as non-redundant capacity components.

Tier II: Data centers on this level must have single, non-redundant distribution path serving IT equipment, as well as non-redundant capacity components. Additionally they must have redundant capacity components, as well.

Tier III: Data centers on this level must have single, non-redundant distribution path serving IT equipment, as well as non-redundant capacity components. They must also have redundant capacity components. Additionally, it’s required that multiple independent distribution paths serving IT equipment are present. Generally, only one distribution path serves equipment at any given time. All IT equipment is dual-powered and fully compatible within the topology of a site's architecture.

In layman’s terms, Tier III certification requires the data center infrastructure to be concurrently maintainable, meaning that each and every component and element in the distribution paths for power, cooling, network etc can be removed from service on a planned basis without impacting any of the computer equipment.  The benefit? Tier III certified facilities keep your data safe and secure, based  on the cutting edge of data management and recovery technology.

Recovery Point is committed to providing the type of data center facilities, backup and recovery services and infrastructure that help companies keep critical data and vital technology assets protected and available, supporting   workflow continuity and efficiency at its highest degree. We are happy to be able to provide such an array of data management services with a flexibility that meets our clients requirements in this ever-changing business world.
